Sheaffer calligraphy

This review is about a total new category of fountain pen: a calligraphy pen. Now, what is calligraphy? Calligraphy is some kind of arty writing, creating nice looking letters and more. Therefore you can use some special writing tools, such as the Sheaffer calligraphy pen.

I bought this pen from a local store in Ghent, Schleiper. I paid 12,50€ for it. The pen comes in a paper box and includes, besides the pen, 2 Sheaffer ink cartridges (blue en black).

The pen’s main material is plastic, besides the nib and the clip, they are in stainless steel. This means the pen is low in weight, only 15 grammes for the complete pen, and without cap only 9 grammes. The grip of the pen is soft due to some kind of rubber grip.
What I don’t like is the cut-out on the barrel to see the ink reservoir. The cut-out is very sharp and after a time it seems to cut into your hand.

The nib comes with a fine nib (F). Although it’s a fine nib, the pen writes wet, so as a left-handed writer, I had to be careful not to wipe through my writings. Why the nib is so wet? When you compare with other fine nibs, this nib is quite broad, this to give it more calligraphy possibilities. The nib is made out of stainless steel and is not too stiff.
Due to the wetness of the nib, this pen consumes a lot of ink. Reverse use of the nib is not possible.

The cap of the pen has a steel clip with the typical Sheaffer white dot. You can use the pen posted, it stays well on the back, no issues with that. On the other hand, when using the pen posted, the cap adds more weight and the pen is more balanced.

For testing the pen, I used a Sheaffer cartridge, but you can also buy a Sheaffer converter for around 7,40€ (cfr. But, a converter may be not ideal because it can hold less ink then a cartridge, and keeping in mind the ink consumption…
I tested the ink on Rhodia paper, here are the results:

Conclusion: just consider this as a very low-entry calligraphy pen for some fun writing, nothing more, nothing less. Keep in mind that you need a lot of time for letting the ink dry. For sure there are better alternatives.
